The Wine Advocate 93 FOR THE 2014 VINTAGE
The red 2014 Mauro is mostly Tempranillo with some 10% Syrah from different vineyards in the villages of Tudela de Duero, Traspinedo, Santibañez and Quintanilla de Onésimo. It matured in oak for some 16 months. 2014 is a serious, balanced year, still a powerful wine but with better integrated oak. In fact, they told me they have started using 4,000-liter oak foudres for the aging of this wine and the oak feels different. There is also some earthiness coupled with the very fine tannins. This is a serious vintage of Mauro, in the house style, with very good freshness. Some 300,000 bottles produced.
James Suckling 91 FOR THE 2015 VINTAGE
Enormous mulberry nose and massive dry tannins, but they aren't aggressive or edgy, and this wine should age nicely. Excellent example from the region. Best from 2018.
Wine Spectator 93 FOR THE 2015 VINTAGE
A plush red, with an iron backbone. Ripe plum and currant flavors mingle with toasty and espresso notes, backed by well-integrated tannins and balsamic acidity. Has good density and balance, in the modern style. Tempranillo with Syrah. Drink now through 2025. 25,000 cases made. — TM
