Winery: Joh. Jos. Prüm

Label   Fact Sheet

Description: The wines of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr possess an excellent structure, show beautiful, ripe aromas and flavours (typically stone fruits, like peach), a fine minerality and great depth and length. Especially after having been aged for some years, their harmony, finesse and expression is unique. The grapes of this Auslese gold cap are selected during harvest and contain a certain amount of botrytis, resulting in a higher concentration of the grape juice. It is a” limited edition” and shows itself silky, harmonious and refined, with apricot, apple, lime and mineral aromas and flavours on a light-weight frame. Balanced, its hidden structure is evident in the tanginess on the finish and lingering aftertaste of baked apple.

Wine & Spirits Magazine 93 FOR THE 2012 VINTAGE
This carries an enchanting balance of floral scents and savory notes of stone. It’s at once delicate and profound, a millefeuille of peach pit, peach flesh and peach skin flavors given gravitas by the intense minerality. Those flavors reverberate with earthy, leesy power, notes of candied orange, cardamom and clove spice. Drink it now to capture its delicacy; put it away for a decade or more if you prefer power.
The Wine Advocate 96 FOR THE 2015 VINTAGE
The 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Gold Capsule (AP 20) is still pretty reductive and flinty on the nose and needs a lot of aeration. Sweet and concentrated, with a fine botrytis and grapefruit flavor, this Riesling has tight structure, mouth-watering fruit and good acidity. There is also an endless flow of salts and stones. This is a very promising Auslese, whose structure and mineral expression give the wine an almost dry taste. This is great Riesling to be served no earlier than 2027.
James Suckling 97 FOR THE 2015 VINTAGE
The most exotic and succulent of the 2015 Auslese Gold Caps from J.J., but also blessed with dazzling finesse and brilliance that you rarely encounter in sweet wines of any kind. What a finish! Best from 2020 and almost limitless aging potential.
James Suckling 97 FOR THE 2015 VINTAGE
What makes this stand out is the gigantic mineral freshness that's perfectly married to its richness. This gives the finish a whole extra dimension lacking in the majority of 2015 Auslese. The nose still needs some time to open, and this will be so much more effusive from 2019. Hoping to live to experience it at its mature peak in a couple of decades.
Wine Spectator 96 FOR THE 2017 VINTAGE
Lush but not thick, dense and complex yet supple and light, this auslese shows concentrated creamed honey, citrus and sweet mint notes, all seamlessly flowing across the palate. A terrific sweet Riesling. Best from 2024 through 2047. 55 cases imported. — AZ
Wine Enthusiast 98 FOR THE 2017 VINTAGE - 98 POINTS
The 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule), AP 17 18, is deep and flinty on the perfectly ripe, intense and tropical-scented nose with its ripe yellow nectarine and peach aromas. The wine exhibits very fine botrytis with crunchy-salty slate features on the palate and is racy-piquant, highly stimulating, crisp and crunchy on the finish, with lingering salinity. This 2017 Sonnenuhr is still very young and needs time to calm down but is still lush and fresh, and the bottle will be emptied before you have even thought about the wine. It's very long, complex and tensioned—just fabulous. Tasted in March 2019.
