The Wine Advocate 91 FOR THE 2011 VINTAGE
I was impressed with the latest release of Finca la Cuesta, from the 2011 vintage, a Mencía cuvée from chalk and clay soils fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in French oak barrels for 14 months. It has a very aromatic profile with a high-pitched minty note that is quite balsamic and attractive with incipient complexity. The palate is medium-bodied, with well-integrated oak, very fine tannins and remarkable freshness for a warm vintage like 2011. May the new label mean a new style? I like it. Very good value and textbook example of Mencía from Bierzo. I look forward to the 2012... 40,000 bottles
Wine Spectator 88 FOR THE 2012 VINTAGE
This firm red delivers a beam of cherry fruit, framed with smoke, licorice and mineral notes. Not a muscular wine, but has density and grip, with enough acidity for balance. Mencía. Drink now through 2023.
Vinous - Antonio Galloni 91 FOR THE 2011 VINTAGE
(made from 60-year-old mencia vines; aged for 14 months in a combination of new and one-year-old French oak barrels): Bright purple. Zesty redcurrant, raspberry, licorice and violet on the nose. Bright, juicy and focused, showing very good depth to its intense red fruit and floral pastille flavors. In a cool, racy, mineral-driven style, finishing with gentle sweetness and strong persistence.
