Powell & Son "Loechel" Eden Valley Shiraz 2016
Region: Barossa Valley
Winery: Powell & Son
Grapes: Shiraz
Vintage: 2016
Label
Description: The Loechel Eden Valley Shiraz is sourced from a single vineyard at the Southern tip of the Eden Valley township. It was planted half a century ago by the Loechel family to granitic loam, at 400 metres altitude. The vineyard is planted on a steep Easterly aspect with high drainage and low yields, resulting in concentrated fruit and rich, complex wines. The vineyard is picked in three seperate components which are kept seperate throughout vinification. One third of the vineyard’s fruit is retained to produce the Loechel Shiraz which is determined at blending prior to bottling.

The Wine Advocate 96 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE
From 70-year-old vines on granitic soils in the Eden Valley, the 2016 Loechel Shiraz features bright, floral aromas, hints of crushed stone and a tight, unyielding core of blueberry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, firm and concentrated, with plenty of aging potential. It's perhaps the most Northern Rhône-ish of these offerings.
Wine Spectator 92 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE
Dense and smooth, this strikes a balance between juicy, licorice-scented red fruit flavors and more concentrated notes of fresh loam, rosemary, cigar box and savory bacon fat. Harmonious and expressive on the generous, long finish. Drink now through 2028. –MW
