Powell & Son Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2016
Region: Barossa Valley
Winery: Powell & Son
Grapes: Grenache Blend
Vintage: 2016
Label   Fact Sheet

Description: The Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro combines all three of the great Rhone red varieties, harmonising the unique attributes of each variety into a complete wine. The blend is predominantly Grenache (approximately two thirds – vintage dependent) from mature Barossa Valley Grenache bush vines, with Shiraz and Mataro making up the balance. The parcels are matured for 15 months in 2,300 litre French oak foudres prior to blending and bottling. As the dominant component, Grenache offers powerful aromas of red fruits, kirsch and black cherries, complemented by mincemeat, leather, game and heavy spices from the Shiraz and Mataro influences.

The Wine Advocate 94 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE
One of the best values and flat-out sexiest wines in the lineup is the 2016 Grenache-Shiraz-Mataro. Driven by the 1901-planted Grenache from Seppeltsfield that makes up 60% of the blend, it's richer, darker and deeper than the Riverside bottling. Sage and licorice notes add nuance to the black cherries on the nose and palate of this full-bodied, richly concentrated and layered offering.
Wine Spectator 94 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE
Distinctive, floral details of plum blossom and bergamot lead the way, featuring a fleshy core of cherry and raspberry flavors that are juicy and ripe, with a whiff of gunpowder tea on the finish, where the tannins provide some grip. Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Drink now through 2028. -MW
