The Wine Advocate NA FOR THE 2014 VINTAGE
The 2014 Elton Vineyard Pinot Noir comes from volcanic Jory soils and was picked on 25 September. It has an attractive nose, earthier than Lavinea's other single vineyard releases, with notes of leather and undergrowth infusing a red berry fruit. There is something almost animal-like here. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin, clean and smooth red cherry and strawberry fruit with touches of cassis. It feels harmonious in the mouth with just a little heat showing through on the finish. Other than this, it is a perfectly respectable Pinot Noir that should drink well for 7-10 years.
Vinous - Antonio Galloni 94 FOR THE 2014 VINTAGE
Deep red. Deep-pitched red and dark berry aromas are complicated by suggestions of smoky minerals, incense and lavender, and a subtle hint of Indian spices emerges with air. Juicy and deeply concentrated yet lithe, offering sweet black raspberry, cherry cola and floral pastille flavors and a refreshing jolt of peppery spices. The strikingly long, focused finish features resonating florality and supple tannins that fold effortlessly into the clinging, sappy fruit.
Jancis Robinson NA FOR THE 2014 VINTAGE
Aromatics of pine, crisp red currant and cranberry. Vibrant red fruits and earthy accents through the palate lead to a crunchy mineral finish. Persistent acidity and fine tannins with just a bit of creaminess through the mid palate and a touch of heat on the finish. (ECB) 17/20
Wine Spectator 93 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE Dynamic, with a stately elegance, offering refined dark cherry, savory black tea and clove flavors that take on dimension and tension toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2025. 263 cases.
James Suckling 92 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE Fresh red flowers and earthy notes are played neatly across ripe red-cherry aromas to good effect. The palate has a toasty and juicy array of fresh, attractive red cherries and makes for an excellent, drink-now style.
Wine Enthusiast 92 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE A smooth, supple, yet muscular wine, this brings blackberry and black-cherry fruit, a vein of cola and a dusting of chocolate powder. It's already drinking quite nicely, with well-integrated fruit and barrel flavors, while a nice lemony acidity underscores the finish.
