The Wine Advocate 90 FOR THE 2014 VINTAGE
The 2014 Elton Vineyard Chardonnay comes from 22-year-old vines and was picked on 17 September, then matured in 20% new French oak. It has an attractive, quite low-key bouquet with grilled walnut and smoky scents complementing the citrus fruit. There is a sense of control and precision here that I appreciate. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp line of acidity. It does not deliver quite the complexity of the aromatics, though there is tension here and a delicious squeeze of lime on the Burgundy-style finish. Enjoy this over the next 6-7 years.
Vinous - Antonio Galloni 94 FOR THE 2014 VINTAGE
Pale yellow-gold. A highly perfumed, complex bouquet evokes ripe citrus and orchard fruits, iodine, brioche and white flowers, and a hint of smoky lees emerges with air. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering intense Meyer lemon, pear nectar and buttered toast flavors that pick up mineral and floral nuances on the back half. Powerful and deeply concentrated yet vibrant as well, finishing extremely long and sappy, featuring impressively persistent floral and mineral flourishes.
Wine Spectator 92 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE Shows polish and precision, with expressive apple, crushed stone and toffee accents that build richness on the long finish. Drink now through 2022. 303 cases made.
James Suckling 93 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE This has a restrained array of lemon and chalky mineral elements on the nose, leading to a palate that has a long, supple and succulent core of fresh and zesty, crisply focused citrus and white-peach flavor. Long and impressive. Drink now.
Wine Enthusiast 92 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE Fresh and deep, this offers ripe fruit flavors of apple, Asian pear and white melon. It was fermented in barrel with native yeast and 20% new oak. The structure, as with all Lavinea wines, is perfectly balanced for optimal tension and texture.
