Label   Fact Sheet

Description: The vineyards of Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, being the neighbor downstream the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, has a similar sun exposition and steepness, but differs from the latter in as far as the soil is less steep, the roots hit on the firm slate rock sooner and are challenged more, there. The wines of the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr are very complex and show a dense minerality. They are usually more austere than its neighbour vineyards’ wines, and lower in acidity.

The Wine Advocate 92 FOR THE 2014 VINTAGE
"The 2014 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese (AP #16) offers a beautiful mix of white nectarines, tropical fruits, flinty slate and lemon flavors on the nose. Very elegant and round on the palate, with a lingering salinity and stimulating piquancy, this is a well balanced and juicy Sonnenuhr with tropical fruit flavors and honeydew melon aromas; it has a long, grippy and charming finish. Nice purity, but also sensually juicy in its sweet and fruity texture."
Jancis Robinson NA FOR THE 2015 VINTAGE
A little bit sulkily recalcitrant on the nose, but everything falls into place with the first sip. Grapefruit marmalade. Gorgeous, chewy, demanding acidity with an intensity and sharp sweetness of yuzu lemon fruit. Green apples and white pepper and pith. Clings with razor-wire tension. (TC) 17.5/20
The Wine Advocate 93 FOR THE 2013 VINTAGE
The 2015 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese has a clear and discreet, but very deep and elegant fruit aroma that indicates a cool smokiness of crushed stones. This Riesling is very clear, piquant and elegant on the palate, with a gorgeously lush fruit and lingering salinity and mineral grip. This is an excellent, well-concentrated and expressive terroir Riesling from the other Sonnenuhr. Now the Wehlener needs all its charms, because otherwise the Zeltinger is Prüm's Spätlese king in 2015.
Vinous - Antonio Galloni 93 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE
• Fresh apple garlanded in honeysuckle and heliotrope sets the tone for a generously juicy, subtly creamy palate seductively loaded with inner-mouth floral perfume and leading to an inhalative, delicate but seriously sustained finish vividly underlain with wet stone and tinged with bittersweet, smoky nut oils and mouthwatering salinity.
The Wine Advocate 94 FOR THE 2016 VINTAGE
Katharina's 2016 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese (AP 06 17) is super clear, precise and aromatic on the nose, showing good concentration that is perfectly interwoven with the smoky minerality of the Sonnenuhr. Super lush and round on the palate, this is a gorgeously rich and supple Spätlese with remarkable finesse and elegance. The acidity is ripe and fully integrated. The Zeltinger drinks perfectly today—and it won't survive in any cellar, because you just can't resist it.
Wine Spectator 92 FOR THE 2017 VINTAGE
Elegant and crisp, yet rich and flavorful, combining flavors of currant, honeysuckle and passion fruit that meet with slate notes on the well-defined, lingering finish. Needs some air now, but better to put this in the cellar and forget about for some time. Best from 2022 through 2034. 70 cases made. — AZ
Wine Enthusiast 93 FOR THE 2017 VINTAGE - 93 POINTS
The 2017 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese is fine and flinty on the highly elegant and beautifully slatey nose with its discreet and refined flinty aromas. Salty-piquant and fresh on the palate, this Spätlese has a lot of elegance, charm and finesse and is quite creamy textured on the finish. This is a crystalline Riesling, and its finish is crunchy, fresh and piquant, with a creamy texture and good tension but also a frisky and serious character. You can enjoy the wine today, but cellaring makes much more sense for now. Tasted in March 2019.
